You may have noticed I talk a lot about “busyness” in these blogs.
Because, nowadays, it’s by far the most common reason that people give for not exercising or making different food choices.
And, as I always say, I get it.
I get that we’re all busy
I get that from being super busy myself and decades of working with busy people.
But, again as I always say, I get that it’s my job to help people ask better questions around that busyness to enable them to still make forward progress.
Because it’s tempting to view busyness as very black or white.
To completely switch off to doing anything because we feel we’re “too busy”.
I’m the most powerful question I have for when people say things like “What if I’m too busy?” or “I am too busy” is;
“Too busy for what?”
“Too busy to do this” is a fairly normal answer.
“What is ‘this’?” I might respond.
And the answer to that is normally pretty vague.
“This. All of it. Exercise. The eating.”
When we drill down a little deeper, it usually becomes clear that, whilst we may be “too busy” for some versions…….
We’re never so busy that we can’t do anything at all.
If we get a clear definition, with actual time requirements, for what we are “too busy” for…….
Then we can then just work backwards to a version that only requires an amount of time that we’re not too busy for.
If we’re too busy to do three or four workouts per week somewhere else……
Could we do one or two there?
And maybe some other exercise at home?
If we’re too busy to to cook multiple ingredient meals from scratch every day………
Could we just eat the exact same thing we’re eating now but in smaller portions?
Or just make some different food choices that require the same or less time than what we’re currently having?
Let’s not hide behind the silly “that’s not worth it” justification that we use.
Because doing something will always produce better results than doing nothing.
So, when you think you’re too busy, ask what you’re actually too busy for .
And, if it genuinely is the case that you’re too busy for that, what are you not too busy for that will still take you in the right direction?
