At this time of year (and for the last few months) a common justification for not doing something becomes “I’ll leave it till September”. Whether that’s a potential new member considering starting with us or existing member talking about getting back to Sessions or (re)making some changes to what they’re eating. And I hear similar from early October onwards about “(re)starting in January”. And then lots of different variations throughout the year about “leaving it” until “after holidays” / “the kids go back” / “work dies down” / “I’m not busy” and so on. And I get that I really do. It’s completely understandable thought process that we want to “be able to give it 100%” (the phrase that usually follows the explanation of when they intend to leave it until). But a powerful question we could ask ourselves at that point is “What percentage can you give it?” When I do ask that, which I often do, it usually leads to a “What do you mean?”. “Well, no one gives you 100%. It’s pretty much impossible. I know I’ve never got anywhere near. All of our members are achieving great results by doing probably somewhere between 30 and 70% of what they could. What percent do you think you could it give at the moment?” Because that’s true. No matter how many Sessions a member comes to they could probably come to twice as many, in theory. No matter how well they’re eating, they’re probably not eating half as well as an Olympic athlete or professional bodybuilder. And that’s fine Because they don’t have to. The amount that we have to do in order to make forward progress is nowhere near 100%. Just something more than what we’ve been doing whilst going backwards will produce somewhere between slower regression, maintenance and forward progress. So, the next time you catch yourself thinking about leaving it until you “can give it a hundred percent”……. Remember that you never will. Ask yourself what percent you can realistically give. Then just do that. Waiting until you can give 100% is often how we end up giving 0%. Much love, Jon ‘Googles’ Hall. P.S. When you’ve finally had enough of eternal deferment and are ready for knowingly sub-optimal forward (but done) progress and have made peace with that’s how you’ll actually get results, then reply to this with LOOK ROUND to arrange a chance to come to RISE, see a Session in action, get a feel for the place and decide (no pressure, no salesley stuff) if you want to give it a try.
