I mentioned in yesterday’s blog a question that I sometimes ask of existing members who haven’t been engaging.
Here’s another question that I sometimes ask, this time of people who are considering getting started with us but are expressing some variation of “I need to have a think about it”.
I’ll often ask “What would you say is your biggest concern?”
And the usual answer will be “No concerns, I just need to think about it”.
Which I won’t buy.
If we had zero concerns about any course of action then we would definitely take it.
If it was just benefits and zero potential drawbacks, why wouldn’t we?
In reality, we’ll have concerns about many (if not all) decisions.
We perhaps just haven’t fully rationalised them in our head yet.
But that doesn’t mean they’re not there.
A little further probing usually reveals that people’s primary concern is along the lines of;
“That I won’t use it enough and / or get the results that I want”
After all, if it was completely impossible that we wouldn’t get the results that we desired, I think everyone would get cracking.
———- And if I could make it happen instantly with no effort needed, I’d be a billionaire ———–
And what we usually discover then is what they’re actually concerned about is they won’t be able to do this theoretically perfect version they’ve created in their head.
They won’t be able to come 3 to 5 sessions a week, eat like a nutritionist, stop stacking, stop drinking and so on.
But none of those things are needed to make forward progress.
We usually then create a plan that is more than doable, but that still takes us where we want to be over time (it’s www.myrise.co.uk/apply to do that now rather than pretending that doing nothing because “it’s Christmas” makes any sense)
Sometimes there’s resistance over “getting my money’s worth” (and I’ll cover that tomorrow).
But it’s powerful to realise that our usual concern over doing something is that it won’t quite turn out as we might like.
And often the version of what we think would need to happen is very black and white and more than is actually needed.
So let’s set a plan that can and will happen under the circumstances………
And then do that.
Because knowingly sub-optimal forward progress now is always better than theoretically better progress deferred.
Much love,
Jon ‘ed Ape’ Hall
