How much exercise is worth doing?
If you generally wanted to do three workouts per week and you could only do one this week, would you do it?
Or would you think “there’s no point, I’ll leave it till next week”?
From experience, most would do the latter.
And I get that.
But, there’s a few considerations here.
Firstly it’s worth remembering that first workout of the week is the most beneficial.
And it’s diminishing returns.
The difference in health and fitness between someone who hasn’t exercised at all for 10 years……………
And someone that exercised once per week for 10 years………….
Is greater than the difference between that person and the person that’s done twice per week.
And so on.
It’s also worth remembering that one workout this week and three next, adds up to four.
33% more across the fortnight than we were considering.
But……………..
Perhaps the biggest benefit of that one workout…………….
Is the change in perception…………..
From “I’ve stopped and need to ‘start again'”…………..
To “Slowing down and speeding up as circumstance dictates”.
How likely do you reckon you are to do three workouts next week if you’ve done one this week?
Give it a percentage probability.
And how likely do you reckon you are to do three workouts next week if you’ve none this week?
I’d assume you said more likely for the first – having done one workout this week.
That first workout is the most beneficial.
It increase the total number across the fortnight.
And it makes it much more likely that you’ll do more than one next week.
Worth remembering next time we tell ourselves that “it’s not worth doing”.
Much love,
Jon ‘Tree’ Hall
