Every year, the family and I do a holiday with my side of the family and a holiday with my wife’s side of the family.

This week, we’re in South Wales with the Halls (my parents) and Bainses (sister, brother-in-law, nephew and niece).

A few weeks ago we had nine days with my in-laws.

It was a much quieter holiday than we usually do.

COVID and all that.

Less activities.

No meals out.

As I by-product, I did a lot more puzzles.

You know, those puzzle books you get from the likes of WH Smiths.

I love them.

Have done since my Nanna introduced me to them when I was, maybe, eight or so.

But rarely make the time for them in normal life.

Near the end of the holiday, I was flicking through the puzzle books we had with us.

And I noticed a pattern.

I’d finished all of certain types of puzzle.

And hadn’t even touched some of the others.

Every single logic puzzle, SuDoku, Killer SuDoku, Suguru, Maths puzzle, Skeleton crossword, and others done.

Not a single normal crossword, arrow word or the like even started.

It made me realise something.

I like solving problems.

Figuring something out.

Through a few twists and turns.

Arriving at an answer.

I’m less bothered by puzzles where you, kinda, just know the answer already or don’t.

I know you can figure out crossword answers from the letters of other words.

But you mostly will already know the word and what it means – it’s just not jumping to mind.

I like solving problems.

Which I know.

It’s what I do.

It’s what we do.

We’ve mentioned before that what we do is ‘coaching’ not ‘consultancy’ or ‘instruction’.

All those roles have there place in our (and any other) industry.

But the latter two are already more than covered.

An instructor gives you the answers to their questions.

You get a programme in a gym from a Fitness Instructor or go to a fitness class and everyone gets pretty much the same ‘answers’.

——— You know, warm up on the recumbent bike, 10 minutes each on the cross-trainer, rower and treadmill, three sets of eight on five different resistance machine followed by some ab work and a stretch on the matts ———–

Been given a diet plan in the same.

A set list of meals for you to eat that’s the same for everyone on that plan.

A consultant gives you the answers to your questions.

Most Personal Trainers fall into this category.

You’ll tell them what you want and they’ll give you a somewhat personalised plan to achieve that.

A coach helps you ask better questions.

There’s no point answering the same questions you’ve asked before in the same way.

People are often surprised when they come to us that we won’t just tell them what to do.

“Tell me what to do and I’ll do it” is a common request.

Despite that not having worked for them, long term, every other time they’ve asked it.

The same answers to the same questions are what they need.

They’re not what you need.

We need to ask better questions.

But, coaching is a two way process.

We can’t coach ‘at you’.

There’s only so much anyone will ever get by just reading our blogs, watching our videos, checking the Learn section of the app and site and so on.

If you’re already a member and are RISEing, that’s awesome.

If you want to accelerate that, let’s have a chat?

You’re happy with it, keep going.

If you’re floating or sinking?

Talk to us.

Reply to this email.

PM me or a coach.

Talk to us in a session.

Don’t hide behind “I know what I need to do” I just need to do it.

We’re here to help solve those problems.

Not just to try and keep forcing the proverbial wrong letters and numbers into the wrong spaces.

Not a member yet?

Talk to us still.

Reply to this.

Let us know what you’re struggling with.

Or, better still, come check out what we do in the RISE Together Programme.

No salesy stuff, no pressure.

Much love,
