Imagine you’re drowning.

You surface long enough to see someone on a boat.

They have life preservers.

You know – those floating rings that you’d get under your arm pits so that you float.

“Throw me a ring” you shout.

“I’ve already thrown you loads” they reply.

“You’re just not grabbing them at all”.

“I just a need a different one. Maybe a bigger one” you respond.

Daft, no?

Other rings might be the answer if you’re trying your best to grab those already available, but that isn’t quite working.

But throwing more and more in won’t help if you’re not.

This is, of course, an analogy.

Our results are way better than the industry average.

But it would be untrue to suggest everyone is always making the progress they would like.

And to hide that (like most facilities do) actually just makes those people feel worse and more helpless about their situation.

Sometimes people let me know they feel they need more support.

Maybe more accountability.

Which I get.

But……….

If they’d not been using the existing support and accountability systems………..

Then throwing a few more in there wouldn’t make any difference.

If we want “accountability” we need to be willing and able to account for action.

We want more support, we have to use the support that’s there.

It doesn’t mean it will all magically become easy and everything will be perfect.

But if we’re ignoring the easiest to do stuff (minutes to Touch Base and set a RISE Plan for the week, two to three minutes per module to work through the Learn tab and / or seconds to respond to a message)…………..

Then we’re not going to do anything with ‘bigger’ stuff.

More life preservers might be the answer at times.

But only if we’re making an effort to grab those we’ve already been thrown.

Note: This is the best life preserver you’ve ever been thrown. Why not grab it? –> www.myrise.co.uk/apply

Much love,

Jon ‘Hey, kid! What did you do, jump ship? Well what’s with the life preserver?’ Hall

P.S. Anyone for that dated reference?
