I talked yesterday about how we humans work best when we’ve got something in front of us.

Something we value.

Something we can “get our teeth into”.

And that when we don’t have that (or, at least, perceive that we don’t), our mind wanders to the side, the past and the more distant future.

Which is where depression, anxiety and the like lie.

The human brain is a problem solving machine.

For everyone, but particularly the more creative types.

We like to ‘fix’ things.

And, when we don’t have problem we value in front of us………….

It’s human nature to create one.

What that person is saying on Facebook is never as big an issue when we’ve got loads of stuff we really want to be getting on with is it?

What Boris might say next isn’t so much of a concern when we’re busy doing things we value doing and getting done.

All that sh!t that happened in our past doesn’t spring as readily to mind when we’re in the zone does it?

I know this.

I get much more irritated with my family and those around me when I’m bored.

My mind focusses much more on what it’s telling me they “should” or “shouldn’t” be doing when I’m not engaged in something useful.

Find anyone who moans a lot about other people and ask them what their mission in life is and I can guarantee they don’t have one.

This, of course, doesn’t mean we just have to accept stuff we’re not happy with.

It’s about learning to focus on what we can change.

What we want to change.

What we’re willing to change.

Problems we value being solved.

And filling our lives with those so there’s less space for the others.

“Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference”.

Much love,
