Opening lyrics to Cheers of course.

Over the years we’ve done a couple of Cheers intro inspired videos.

Because I like to think there are similarities.

People often comment on this.

You join a GloboGym and all you’re essentially doing is renting access to some equipment.

If you go or not no one knows or cares.

Most people feel some combination of unsure, confused, apprehensive, unwelcome, overwhelmed and / or out of place when they go.

So they stop going.

We don’t feel we ‘belong’.

The second part of the ABC of motivation.

Belonging.

Feel we’re rubbish at something and not getting better?

We probably won’t keep trying.

Feel we don’t belong somewhere (whether in person or virtually) then we won’t ‘stay’.

If we feel that we are a ‘part of something’………..

That is, perhaps, greater than the sum of it’s parts………..

That, to a reasonable level at least, we like to ‘go’ to…………

To be part of………….

Then we stand a good chance of keeping going.

So, if you don’t currently feel you ‘belong’, how can we make that so?

If you’re already a ninja, how could we get you to engage more with what we’re doing?

Maybe do the sessions on Zoom rather than Facebook Live so you feel like you’re doing it with others more?

Maybe get involved more with social stuff, events, etc?

Interact in the group more?

Get you feeling competent and get you feeling like you belong and we’re two thirds of the way there.

Much love,

Jon ‘A German Reckons with History and Home’ Hall

P.S. William Simmonite (yesterday’s middle name) was Compo from Last Of The Summer Wine’s real name. And it sounds a bit like Competence. Sort of.

P.P.S. Practically impossible middle name today so I’ll give it you know. It’s the subtitle of a book called ‘Belonging’
