I was chatting to another dad from my youngest’s year group on the side of a rugby pitch the other day.
He runs a business that helps fitness business owners, markets and run their businesses.
Amongst other things, he asked me “Who’s you competition?”.
Something I’ve been asked many times over the years.
And there’s two ways I can answer that.
I could list other facilities in the area that ‘do group exercise’ in some way.
But, in reality, it’s very rare that any of our members leave us to go to one of them.
Not saying it doesn’t happen, but only in a small percentage of cases.
Most people who leave us end up;
– Not doing any exercise for a while or
– Joining a budget gym and usually not going all that much
Because the vast majority of people when they get to the point of leaving us (outside of genuine logistical changes) haven’t been coming to Sessions as much as they like and / or are wanting to save money.
So, in reality, our competition is everything else they spend their time and money on.
And some of those things will be essential and unchangeable.
But some won’t be.
It’s nights out.
Take out.
Netflix and other similar entertainment.
It’s the appeal of a warm house and a comfy sofa.
It’s tasty, hyperpalatable, super moorish, calorie dense food.
In the vast majority of cases when people choose not to join us or to leave us, that’s where their time and money end up going.
So that really is our competition.
And all of those things are fine.
They’re great really.
I’m never going to suggest that we stop them completely.
I enjoy all of those things as much as the next person.
But could we spend 10 or 20% less on each of them and that make the difference.
A difference that enables us to do what needs to be done to have a body that we like the look and feel off.
To have energy levels that don’t let us down.
To keep our mood and mental health in a good place.
To make all those other things even more enjoyable, not less (it’s www.myrise.co.uk/apply if you like the sound of these things. If you’re thinking of doing this in the New Year, you’ll want to look into reserving a space soon. They always go before Christmas)
Much love,
Jon ‘Fox’ Hall
