I’ve mentioned before in these blogs that our retention is pretty good compared to the industry average for what we offer.
But that people do, of course, leave.
Less than 5% a month on average.
Which also means 95% plus stay even thought there’s no tie in.
Everywhere has leavers.
Just most of our competition hides it.
Or they only have 40 members so losing 2 a month doesn’t seem a big deal but it is, of course, the same percentage.
After being open 68 months, that’s added up to there being more ex-members than current ones.
Simple maths.
I was in town with my kids the other day and I bumped into four ex-members in a row who I stopped and briefly chatted to.
## There’s been many times where I’ve bumped into consecutive current members – the other Friday night I saw 7 current members and no ex ones – ’twas just a coincidence ##
Each time the kids asked “who was that person?”
After the fourth Oli asked “Why are there more ex-members Daddy?”
I think he was worried I wouldn’t be able to feed him soon.
And that boy eats a lot!
I explained the above maths.
And that it’s just part of parcel of running a service business.
People come and go.
Aim to maximise retention, sure.
But it can never be 100%
If anything, our ability to keep getting fresh people in each month is the biggest key to us still doing well after 6 1/2 years.
Most of our local competitors seem to have done well in in the first year or so as people join because it’s exciting and new.
But then struggle to keep numbers up when the novelty wears off.
So, it’s just one of those things.
We accept that, for as long as we’re going to keep doing this, we need to keep doing things to bring new people in (whilst maximising retention at the same time – they’re not mutually exclusive).
Long Term Weight Management
It’s the same with any goal.
There is no finishing line.
No doing something for an amount of time and then you can stop and just ride that momentum permanently.
Weight management, health and fitness are a lifelong thing.
Sure we may speed up and slow down as circumstance dictates.
But long term success will never come from just seeing it as something we will do for the next few weeks or months.
That’s a sure fire route to long term failure.
It’s fine to have short term goals along the way.
But we then need to find a way to transition them into longer term success.
And add fresh short to medium term goals, milestones and events along the way that will keep us enthused.
And to question the mindsets we may have that hold us back from doing that.
