In yesterday’s blog I mentioned my wife insists on calling Disneyland Paris by it’s original name.

EuroDisney.

Having googled it, I was surprised to see how long ago the name change occurred.

EuroDisney opened on 12th April 1992.

By a happy coincidence we were there on the 30th anniversary.

In early 1994 it was renamed Euro Disney Resort Paris.

In late 94 it became Disneyland Paris.

In March 2002 it became Disneyland Resort Paris.

Then back to Disneyland Paris in 2009.

Having read up on why it’s all down to a difference in how different people see two of those words.

Euro and Resort.

The inclusion (and exclusion) of both of those words alone affecting attendance numbers.

Disney CEO Michael Eisner commented at the time, “As Americans, the word ‘Euro’ is believed to mean glamorous or exciting. For Europeans it turned out to be a term they associated with business, currency, and commerce.”

And the word ‘Resort’ is associated with locations more like the beach or a mountain top retreat to Europeans than it is to the Americans.

49% of attendees to the park are French.

And only 9% come from outside of Europe.

As Eisner continued “Renaming the park ‘Disneyland Paris’ was a way of identifying it with one of the most romantic and exciting cities in the world.

The American owners had used words that meant something to them, but were interpreted differently by the vast majority of their customers.

Something the majority of the fitness industry is guilty of too.

Super technical cues and instructions that mean something to the person who does this for a living…………..

Not so much to the person who’s never really got on with exercise and already has a million things on their mind.

Over the years I’ve seen many other FitPros on the internet claims they are better than us because they use “more advanced” techniques and approaches.

Yet they rarely, if ever, seem to have many success stories to share with the world.

And are often out of the industry within a year or two.

For me, the simpler we can make this, the better.

Especially for our average customer.

Advanced coaching has it’s place for some, sure.

But only a very small percentage of the population.

“Retract the scapula, engage initially through the latissimus dorsi and only engage the biceps as late as possible” is fine for some.

“Get in this position (demoing) then imagine you’re putting the dumbbell in your pocket” is easier to follow for most.

“Screw your feet into the floor with three points of contact, flex equally through the hips and knees, drive out of the bottom squeezing through the glutes whilst retaining core engagement” has it’s place.

“Imagine you’re trying to touch your bottom on a stool that’s just out of reach” works better for the average exerciser.

Knowing and deeply understanding all the ins and outs of your workout plan is what some people need.

Just turning up and being shown what to do is where most people we encounter “are at”.

Complicated, time consuming meal plans can be super beneficial.

“Just getting in an average calorie deficit” is more likely to happen for most people wanting to lose weight.

French writer, poet, aristocrat, journalist and pioneering aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry famously said ‘Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.’

More complicated has it’s place.

But simpler is often the answer.

Much love,

Jon ‘Fun fact for you. There’s an urban legend about Walt Disney being cryogenically frozen on his death. He was, in fact, cremated. The exact opposite’ Hall
