I mentioned yesterday that, when in Leeds the other day, we went to Fazenda.

For those that don’t know, Fazenda is a small chain of “rodizio restaurants”.

A “Brazilian-style steakhouse restaurant. Customers pay a fixed price, and waiters bring samples of food to each customer repeatedly throughout the meal, until the customers signal that they have had enough to eat.”

It’s a high meat content meal.

I ate a lot of meat that night.

Those of you know me personally will know I’ve massively reduced my meat consumption over the last couple of years.

I did do a month without meat as a little experiment.

And have since settled into what I’d estimate to be about a third of the consumption I used to have.

I’d started to feel less comfortable than I used to be about my meat consumption.

From both an animal and environmental perspective.

I’ve had a number of people who don’t eat meat at all ask why I don’t just go for no meat as well.

Which I get.

But I’m happy with the balance I’ve created.

For now, at least.

Because, in my humble opinion, that’s what life is about.

A balance that we’re happy with.

It’s tempting to think that if we’re “going to do something” then we should “do it properly”.

To go all the way to one end of the spectrum with it.

To go to no meat.

Or no snacks.

No alcohol.

No carbs.

No sugar.

No eating at certain times of day.

And all those things are fine, if we’re ok with that.

But that’s not the only option.

If adjusting the balance helps us achieve our goals………..

And we’re happy maintaining that new ‘average’, then that’s cool.

Snacks, alcohol, carbs, sugar and eating at certain times aren’t inherently fattening or bad for our health.

They may contribute to a balance that is, sure.

And changing that balance may benefit us.

But we only need to go all the way to “no” if we want to and are happy to.

If “no” leads to us having “some” and then thinking we’ve “failed” and need to “start again”………..

It’s probably not the best approach for us.

If the balance we create across the week takes us in the direction that we’re happy with…………..

Then let’s just do that.

At least for now.

Much love,

Jon ‘BOSU’ Hall
