Those of you that are Facebook friends with me might have seen the occasional pictures of places the kids and I go exploring around.

I’ll be honest, it’s sometimes just me.

The other day we walked around the outskirts of Hillhead Quarry near Buxton.

It was awesome and they loved it.

Sometimes people say things like “that walk you went for around XYZ looked nice”.

Which sometimes takes me a second or two to ‘compute’.

In my head we didn’t “go for walk”.

The walking was part of the process of what we like doing.

Exploring.

Seeing interesting places and nice views.

If I said to the kids “Do you want to go for a walk?” I’m fairly sure I’d never get a “Yes”.

“Fancy an explore down that valley – I hear there’s a cave there” gets a much better response.

And we can do the same with the way we phrase what we do.

I’m not sure I’ve ever particularly wanted to “go for a workout”………

But “meeting up with friends to do something that’ll make me feel better” is much more appealing (this is something you can do at RISE, even if you don’t know anyone there yet –> www.myrise.co.uk/offer) .

“Cutting out carbs and stopping drinking and snacking” sounds pretty rubbish.

“Eating stuff that makes me feel better” sounds good though, yeah?

“Going to bed early and leaving the next episode of that new box set” doesn’t sound as appealing as “getting a good night’s sleep so I feel better tomorrow”, does it?

If you’re struggling to do something, have a look at how you describe it.

Does it sound a bit “meh” at best?

How else could you describe it………..

To others and / or in your own head…………

That sounds more appealing?

It can’t feel fake or made up.

It has to feel genuine enough.

But they’ll be other ways of describing it that means it’s more likely to happen.

Much love,

Jon ‘Walkabout’ Hall
