I did a series video on ‘energy balance’ for our members only group the other day.
All about where the energy we consume goes, how we can make sure we stay the right side of the balance if we’re wanting to lose (or maintain weight) and so on.
Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT) is the technical term for the energy used in physical movement that isn’t structured exercise.
Moving about, walking, doing stuff, fidgeting, etc.
Most FitPros will recommend increasing NEAT.
Basically burning more calories by moving more outside of workouts.
Park further away from work and walk in.
Take the stairs instead of the lift (they all say elevator which makes me think they’ve copied and pasted it).
Go for a walk in your lunch break.
Do some squats every time you walk past the photocopier.
That sort of stuff.
And I agree with that.
In theory.
In practice?
It’s a bit of a ball ache, isn’t it?
You don’t want to turn up for work all sweaty.
Time is tight as it is without fitting more stuff in, no?
Nice in theory.
Not ideal in practice.
If you can increase movement throughout the day without it being said ball ache, then go for it.
It will help.
Both in calorie burning, health, how you feel and much more.
But, in my humble opinion there are way easier ways to trim away those pesky calories.
Knocking 10% off portion sizes.
Not going hungry, like.
Just not having more than needed.
Having less calorie (and often sugar) dense stuff around at work and home.
You know, cakes, biscuits, etc.
Not saying never have them, but would you feel much different maybe halving the amount?
More filling and (generally) lower calorie veg with meals instead of pasta, etc.
Fitting a bit of extra structured exercise in.
If you can make 12 minutes a day for extra ‘movement’ you make two lots of 45 minutes, no?
## Check if myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting you haven’t yet found somewhere where you’d enjoy a 45 minute workout yet ##
You get the idea.
There are lots of ways to chip away at that calorie balance equation, from both sides.
Moving more throughout the day might be one for you.
But there’s plenty of other ways 🙂
Much love,
