Have you ever expressed that you have “fallen off the wagon”?
I’m sure we all have.
Common expression.
But, like more common expressions than we might realise, it doesn’t really make any sense when we think about it.
There is no wagon.
There’s nothing to fall off.
It’s just a mental construct we have been taught to use a justification for our decisions.
But mental constructs have their place.
They can be beneficial.
It’s not always a case of stopping using them.
Maybe we can tweak them to our advantage.
So maybe we are on a wagon.
Our journey between where we are now and where we’d like to get to.
And that wagon will slow down and speed up as the landscape dictates.
That’s how wagon travel works.
Maybe sometimes we’ll change wagons.
We’ll knowingly get on a slower moving one because that makes sense at that point.
Maybe we’re okay with a wagon that’s going to go slightly in the wrong direction for a little bit.
Because we know that’s better than getting off completely and just heading back to where we started (or even further away).
And ultimately we never actually fall off the wagon do we.
We step off.
We jump.
We choose.
It’s not an accident.
So maybe if the wagon we’re on isn’t working for us right now, we can just choose to get onto another one rather than none at all?
Much love,
Jon ‘s Ho!’ Hall
