Every now and again you realise you haven’t put something across quite as well as you could have.

The other day a member asked me about if we could do him a meal plan.

Initially I thought “Haven’t we made it clear why we don’t think meal plans are a good approach?”

But then realised that I clearly hadn’t.

The question alone shows that.

It’s been mentioned in various blogs, member videos and so on over the years.

And our members’ site explains what we ‘do do’.

But it’s not made explicitly clear why we don’t do meal plans.

So I did a video for the members’ group and added it at the relevant section of the members’ journey (check out RISE in Macclesfield‘s briefing meeting if you like the sound of systems designed to get results and a journey to be taken rather than just workout after workout).

And I’m going to explain it here too 🙂

How Effective Are Meal Plans?

From my experience, giving people a specific food plan to follow can work well short term, but not so much longer term.

As soon as people they are ‘off plan’ it’s common they often revert to old habits.

The long term success rate of these approaches is incredibly low.

If meal plans were ‘the way’ obesity would be reducing, not increasing despite there being millions of free meal plans available online.

Meal Plans - Why They Don't Work

I can’t think of many people who’ve started with a meal plan and then weighed less two years later.

Those that have joined RISE in the meantime 😉

Long Term Weight Loss Success

What we find to be the best approach for long term success is;

1. Helping people understand the implications of their food choices like we do with the information on the members’ site / app. To cut through the misinformation and confusion and know exactly what’s happening.

2. Helping them challenge habits, self-limiting beliefs and so on like we do though the videos, blogs, conversations in the group and in person and much more.

3. Providing a system they can use to create their own food choices in line with what will also get them results like we do with our 1,000+ meal online meal planner system which can be adjusted to take into account preferences, specific requirement, averaging out over the day or week.

When people produce their own plan, inline with what will get them moving the right direction, they are waaaaayyyyyy more likely to follow it and get there. And they know how to adjust when things don’t go according to plan.

4. Having a way for people to easily share what they’ve been doing food wise that we can make suggestions on tweaks and refinements. People can record what they’ve been doing through an app and we can have a look and figure out, together, what changes will help.

A meal plan is the equivalent of being given a fish.

We try and do the equivalent of teaching you to fish.

Much love,
