I mentioned in yesterday’s blog about the value of setting specifics for an intention.

A number of somethings in a certain time frame is more likely to happen than “better” or “more”.

But us humans can often be reluctant to set specific plans.

I know I can be.

Each quarter, as part of the coaching programme I am on, I set specific intentions in the five main areas of my life.

I feel a massive amount of resistance to doing it.

Even after all these years.

For the same reason that we all do.

Fear of failure.

Or, more often, fear of being seen by others to fail.

“I don’t want to set something specific because I feel bad if it doesn’t happen” is the kind of thing we might say (or think).

Or “I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself” (I’ll talk about this tomorrow).

I get that.

Because that’s exactly what I’m thinking when I’m tempted to do the same.

But it’s important to remember that failure is entirely subjective.

The black and white lines that define it are entirely of our own creation.

Take the following three situations;

1. We have no particular plan, do no exercise, eat too much and gain weight

2. We say we’re going “eat better and do some exercise this week” and we do a bit and maintain our weight.

3. We set the specific intention of three workouts and a total 12,000 calories for the week, for 2lbs of weight loss, and we average two workouts and 15,000 calories and lose a pound.

Which of those is the most successful?

And, by that definition, which is the bigger “failure”?

You could argue that getting a worse result when there’s no plan is an even bigger failure.

It’s just hidden.

Choosing to set a specific intention is brave.

We’re putting our head above the parapet.

But no one that ever achieved anything got there by every plan going perfectly every time.

They got there by being ok with falling short and keeping going (it’s www.myrise.co.uk/apply if you’re ready to do this).

Much love,

Jon “Lazio” Hall
