I talked yesterday about the way we describe ourselves.
About how the words we use about ourselves and the situations we face, massively shape the results that follow.
And that changing those narratives can make it much more likely that the results that follow it also change.
Because, ultimately, if we’re not willing to change the story………….
The “ending” won’t change.
Einstein is often quoted as saying that “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results” (apparently he didn’t say it, but the point is still a good one).
If nothing changes, nothing changes.
It’s a powerful realisation to make that we tell stories.
All day every day.
We don’t spend all that long going on about facts.
We don’t sit there and say over and over “I have two hands, I have two hands”.
That’s just something that is and doesn’t create any ‘conversation’.
The stuff we think and talk about the most are, essentially, stories.
Narratives that we’ve created to make sense of the world.
If we had to process every bit of information that enters our brain afresh, then we couldn’t operate the way we do.
Our brain quickly compares it to past situations we’ve encountered.
Sees how it fits into these narratives we have and processes it accordingly.
Leaving brain space for the 5 to 10% of things that are more conscious decisions.
Anything that anyone might have a different opinion on to us is, ultimately, just a story.
Any sentence that includes “should”, “ought” and “need to” is just a story.
Practically every sentence we use that starts with “I am……” is just a story.
Every time we tell ourselves “It’s different for me”, that’s just a story.
“They don’t understand” is just a story.
That’s not an insult.
It’s not a bad thing.
It’s how our brains work and allow us to function.
But realising that they are stories is a reminder that we can tell different stories.
Again, they can’t feel completely “made up”.
We have to believe them to a sufficient degree.
They must show signs, at least, of “becoming true”.
But only with those ‘different stories’ might we reach a different ‘ending’.
Much love,
Jon ‘Happy’ Hall
P.S. You want to change the ending to your story? That’s what we help people with. Reply with ‘Great’ to make that happen (you’ve got a money back guarantee, so where’s the risk?)
