I mentioned in yesterday’s blog that harder a work is a multiplier for the return on doing the right things.

And how it doesn’t matter how hard we try on something if it’s not the thing that’s going to produce the results we desire.

And it’s easy to get confused about what we need to do, particularly for weight loss.

There’s so much confusing, contrary advice and misleading information out there.

We might think that we’re doing the right thing when we aren’t necessarily.

Breakfast being a prime example of this.

Breakfast is, by far, the meal that people talk to me about the most frequently.

I’ve literally just got off a Coaching Call with a member where we discussed it.

“I know what I need to do. I just need to make myself have breakfast and drink more water” she said.

Which is understandable.

I’m sure we’ve all seen many times that these are good things to do.

And maybe they are in some ways.

But they won’t automatically lead to weight loss.

If literally nothing changed about what we ate or our activity levels………

But we drank more water………

There would be zero effect on our weight.

If drinking more water helps us feel better and leads to average better choices then that’s great.

But water in and of itself will not lose us weight.

And there’s a lot of research that shows that, if you take people who don’t normally have what we would consider ‘breakfast’ (you know, a meal at home first thing in the morning)………

And you make them eat an amount of food at that time………

Then leave them to self-regulate the rest of their day’s consumption………

Then the majority of people reduce the remaining consumption by less than what’s been added in by that breakfast.

So they end up eating more overall.

So, all else being equal, will gain weight (or lose it more slowly at least).

The overall deficit across the 24 hours (or the week or month) is what’s key in eliciting weight loss.

If forcing ourselves to eat at a time that we don’t like eating………..

Stops us snacking mid-morning……..

And creates better average overall food choices………

Then that’s cool – that will help.

If it doesn’t, then it’s just adding extra calories in.

There’s nothing magical about eating first thing in the morning (despite what clowns will tell you about it “stoking” some imaginary furnace in you – I’ll come back to this tomorrow).

From my experience (lots of it), the key is for someone to create an approach that;

A – Tick’s the right boxes of what needs to be done for the result that they desire

B – Is something that they are okay with doing and will do

Much love,
