What do you think of when I say “affirmations”?
How about “mantras”.
You probably think of a hippy, sat cross legged in half lotus, finger and thumb raised and touching, humming to themselves and chanting something.
Or someone you might consider a bit of a “loser” looking at themselves in the mirror and repeating “You are a strong, powerful (wo)man”.
You probably don’t think you do affirmations.
I know I didn’t until relatively recently.
The thing is though………
We all do it already.
We have things we say about ourselves and the situations we encounter.
In our head, out loud or both.
Things that, the more we say them, the more our behaviour conforms to them.
“I’m useless”.
“I’m no good at this”.
“Nothing ever goes right for me”
“Everyone else is…….”
“Exercise is boring”.
“Healthy eating takes too long”.
“I haven’t got time”.
“I’m too busy”.
All affirmations.
Which, when we say them, our mind searches out for ‘evidence’ of their truth.
None are hard and fast facts.
Just our opinion.
Which we are ‘affirming’ by saying.
We could, of course, choose a different thing to affirm.
A different way to describe the same situation.
It can’t be just ‘made up’ of course.
It has to be based in reality.
Maybe showing signs of becoming true.
“I’ll get better at this with more practice”.
“It’s worth getting the hang of”.
“I’d benefit from planning and making the best use of my time”.
“It’s worth doing what I can with the time and energy I’ve got”.
And so on.
Check myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting if, come February, you’ll be wanting to make those things come true.
All just as true.
All things we can tell ourselves.
Not wishy-washy wishful-thinking, happy-clappy-hippy stuff.
Just tweaks to the affirmations we’ve probably already had for years.
To ones that will serve us better.
Much love,
Jon ‘A-soft’ Hall
