We often mention the value of tracking our food.

Maybe ongoing.

Maybe just for a few days to get some clarity on what’s been happening and what we could benefit from tweaking.

I don’t think of it as ‘counting calories’.

But, I suppose, it is.

It’s the one thing that always works.

There are tonnes of ways of eating.

Different ‘methods’.

But unless the principle of a calorie deficit occurs, on average, we don’t lose weight.

All the large, controlled, published, peer reviewed, repeatable studies show this.

We can follow any number of approaches and rules we like.

But the first question I’d always ask if they weren’t working is “Did it put you in a calorie deficit?”

If the answer is “No” or, more likely, “I don’t know” then tracking / counting is an advisable next step.

If we think it put us in a deficit and we didn’t lose weight then, until some solid research shows otherwise, it’s pretty safe to say we weren’t in a deficit and it’s worth working out what’s amiss in our calculations.

We don’t have to track / count – but it’s the most reliable method we know of.

The thing is though, we always keep count.

Our body essentially counts every calorie for us.

Storing ever unit of excess energy in fat stores for us.

You always have to keep count.

So, if our body is going to do it anyway…………..

Might it not help for our brain to get clear on what’s going on?

Check the impact of a few tactical swaps and some questioning of portion size.

Amazing what a difference that can make to our energy balance and resulting weight.

Without having to live like a monk and be hungry all the time.

Much love,

Jon ‘Carol Vorderman’ Hall and Matt ‘Rachel Riley’ Nicholson

P.S. We know you’re going to be busy over Christmas. So, if you (or a friend) haven’t already, why not go check out that find out more meeting now? –> myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting.
