Last Monday was our monthly Coaching Day.

After doing a couple of separate days of assessments for the last two days, we returned to a socially distanced version of what we used to do.

As always at Coaching Day, there was a mixture of results.

Some have lost loads of weight or some other measure of progress.

Some happy to have maintained during a difficult time.

Some having gained some but aware it was considerably less than would’ve probably been the case if lockdown had occurred before they were a member here.

When people have got a result they’re not overly happy with, they often say the same thing.

“I know what I need to do, I just need to do it”

Or some variation.

A phrase I must’ve heard several thousand times over the years.

And it’s kinda true.

It would be an insult to someone’s intelligence to suggest they didn’t know how to lose weight.

But, the funny thing is, when I check with the person what they think they have to do to lose weight, it turns out…………

They DON’T know what they need to do.

Or, at the very least, what they’re saying and thinking isn’t what they NEED to do.

It’s what they COULD do, sure.

A method that would probably work for them.

One they’ve used in the past and made progress with.

But it’s very rarely a ‘NEED’.

When asked what it is that they “need to do”, people often reply with phrases like;

“I just need to stop drinking and cut out bread and pasta”.

“I need to start having breakfast again”

“I need to batch cook my meals”

“I need to plan better”

“I need to stop going out”

“I need to stop snacking”

And so on.

Which, again, are all methods that might work for them.

But none are necessary.

You can lose weight without any of those changes.

The only thing we NEED to do to lose weight…………

Is to be in a calorie deficit.

Sure, there are other things to consider and factor in around that.

We get that.

But that is the only necessity.

It is the principal that creates weight loss.

Anything else is just a method that helps that principal to occur.

And whilst having that ‘toolkit’ of methods at our disposal can be useful……..

Telling ourselves that that is what we “need” to do doesn’t always help.

Because as soon as it can’t / doesn’t happen we feel we’ve failed.

We can’t lose weight that week.

Because we can’t / haven’t done what we “need” to do.

“Need to” batch cook on a Sunday night and then don’t?

We feel we’ve failed and “write off” that week.

“Need to” not drink and then have one?

We feel we’ve failed and “write off” that week.

“Need to” cut our certain food groups, snacks, etc?

We feel we’ve failed and “write off” that week.

And so on.

Whereas we can create a calorie deficit every single day, no matter what is happening.

If we choose to (like we could just choose to stop putting off clicking this link to find out more about what we do –> myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting).

We can use methods to make that as easy as possible, of course.

But a daily deficit (or weekly average deficit) is just a series of choices that add up.

And telling ourselves otherwise rarely helps.

Much love,
