My middle son has his SATs exams this week.

He’s a good kid and doing well at school.

But, I’ll be honest, it can be hard work getting him off screens to do stuff at home.

If I left him to his own devices, I’m not sure he’d ever come off devices.

There’s been a lot of resistance to doing his SATs revision.

“I don’t feel like doing it now” is his standard response to my suggestion that we do some.

“You don’t need to feel like doing it, you just need to do it” is my normal reply to that.

Because, like everything in life, the results of a process come from the doing of it, not from how we feel about doing it.

We do the process when we don’t feel like it, the results still come.

We don’t do the process, we don’t get the results.

“Feeling like it” is a ‘nice to have’.

Not essential.

And, if we sit waiting for it, it might be a very long time till it comes.

We do it, irrespective of how we feel and we’re much more likely to start to feel like it sooner (if you’ve been waiting to click this link until you feel like it, or for it to be a “better time”, then maybe now’s the time to stop waiting? –> www.myrise.co.uk/apply) .

I know that when I don’t feel like exercising, the thing that will make me feel like exercising is exercising.

I know that when I don’t feel like eating better, the thing that will make me feel like eating better is eating better.

I know that when I don’t feel like getting more sleep, the thing that will make me feel like getting more sleep is getting more sleep.

Like SATs revision, it’s always worth remembering that we don’t need to feel like doing it to do it and get the results we desire.

And it’s the doing it while we don’t feel like it that’s the shortest path to feeling like doing it.

Much love,

Jon ‘As part of the generation that didn’t do much English Grammar, that’s the bit I really struggle with’ Hall
