My two older sons are of that age (I’m hoping it’s just an age thing) where they get a new word or phrase……..

From their mates, off YouTube, etc……….

And then over do it to a ridiculous degree.

Say it at every opportunity until I have to ask them nicely to never say it again 😂

A recent one is “You think you’re cool don’t you NAME?”.

I’ll do something and they’ll respond, whether it’s remotely in context or not, with “You think you’re cool don’t you Dad?”

Followed, more recently, with “That’s right – you’re not bothered if you’re cool are you Dad?”

Every sentence starts or ends with Dad.

Sometimes both.

Even when we’ve been in conversation for ages and there’s no one else there 😂

They are correct though.

I’ve explained to them why I’m not bothered about being cool.

As we all were, I was when I was younger.

When we’re teenagers we all desperately want to be seen as cool.

But as I’ve got older, I’ve realised something about “being cool”.

It’s living your life by other people’s definition(s).

Making choices because of how other people may (or may not) perceive you.

Dressing or talking or acting in a certain way……..

Because we think we “should”.

Because of what others will think.

Subjugating our own opinions and beliefs to that of others.

Caring more about what other people think about you than what you think about yourself.

When we live our lives in line with our own values, it’s a different ball game.

We make the decisions we want to make because they’re the right thing for us and those we care about.

We learn to tie in the things we might previously have found to be frustrating struggles with the things we value…………..

And make them inspiring challenges.

We’re happy to do them because they tie into the person we feel we are, who we want to be and are becoming.

Exercise and healthier eating stop being things we feel we “should” or “ought” or “need to” do.

They become things we chose to do because of how they tie into what we value in life.

Ways to create energy and endurance to do what’s important to us.

Methods of achieving stuff that actually does drive us and keep us going.

We can ask ourselves what’s truly important to us………..

And what we then need to do for those things to happen.

Much love,
