Have you ever described what you’ve done as self-sabotage?

You know, after you’ve eaten loads, drank a lot, missed some workouts, etc.

And then said “I self sabotaged. I don’t know why I do that”?

You might be feeling you did this last night.

It’s a question you can never answer.

Because that’s not what you’ve done.

We’re asking the wrong question so we’ll never get the answer we need.

The definition of sabotage is;

“deliberately destroy, damage, or obstruct something”

And that’s not what we’re doing.

We’re not doing the thing purely for the negative results it might produce.

We’re doing it for whatever it brings us that we value at that point in time.

We’re aware of the potential downsides sure.

And we may think “Sod it” (or his ‘stronger’ cousin).

But we’re after the short term benefit of that decision.

Not the longer term other, less good, effects.

If we were self sabotaging and wanting purely to gain weight, we’d eat a block of lard of mainline a bag of Tate & Lyle.

If we were wanting to make ourselves less healthy we could do that real quick by drinking some petrol or finding an old building being demolished and lick the asbestos in the walls or hang outside the local power station inhaling what comes out of those big chimneys.

I’m being silly here of course.

But stronger examples sometimes help us question our thoughts.

We’re doing those things not for the downside they bring longer term.

But for the immediate benefits.

To make ourselves feel better normally.

Whether that be the literal chemical effect.

The psychological effect.

The comfort of fitting in and removal of peer pressure.

The logistical ease of the that decision versus another.

The cost difference (money, time and / or effort).

If we think we’re self sabotaging we’ll probably never figure out how to stop.

If we recognise we’re making that decision because of something we value at that point…….

That can help us identify difference decisions that we could make that will still help with what we value.
