12 years or so ago I’d say pretty much everyone I knew was on Facebook.
Since then, a number of people have come off it.
Which is cool, each to their own.
A fairly high percentage of people I know who come off it have told me they did so because it annoyed them and they felt there was a lot of negativity or other undesirable things that they were seeing.
Which always surprises me
As that’s not my experience on Facebook whatsoever.
Whenever I look on Facebook, the majority is stuff I like seeing and I generally enjoy going on there.
I came to realisation a few years ago as to why there is this discrepancy.
Facebook’s algorithm shows us stuff that we interact the most with.
When I see stuff that I like I interact with it.
I give it a like or comment on it.
So I see more of that kind of stuff.
When I see stuff I’m less keen on, I scroll past.
So I see less of that kind of stuff.
If we put negative emojis or comments on things that we don’t like, Facebook is going to feed us more of that sort of stuff.
Often without realising it, we are designing our future experience on Facebook.
And, nearly always without realising it, we do the same with our life.
To a degree, our lives are like the Facebook algorithm.
The more we concentrate and focus on certain things, the more likely we are to see them and more likely they are to occur in our lives.
Not always, sure.
But probably more than we realise.
The more time and energy we spend focusing on the less desirable aspects of our lives, the more likely we’re going to see such things and more likely our behaviour is going to create yet more of them.
The more we concentrate on the good stuff and the things that we want, the more likely there is to be more of that and the more we’ll behave in a way that makes more of that happen.
What we appreciate appreciates.
Remembering that life is often like our Facebook algorithm and we experience more of what we give the most attention to can help us change our experience of life (and of Facebook).
Much love ,
