When I was a kid I did bit of Karate.
Not much like.
We moved house a month after I turned six and didn’t carry it on then.
I think I passed my first grading if I remember correctly.
You may have done something similar.
Maybe gained a belt or two.
Or, at least, you’ll be aware of the concept.
Going through different gradings, earning different belts and so on.
If you went to your first lesson and saw a black belt busting out some cool Bruce Lee type moves, what would you think?
You probably wouldn’t think you’re rubbish at the martial art, would you?
You’d just accept that person had been doing it longer and had done more.
You’re just a white belt.
Starting on that journey of getting better.
You might make black belt one day.
But, at least, you’d be down with the whole concept of getting the practice in, improving and working up the levels over time.
No beating yourself.
No chastising yourself for not being a black belt yet.
Thinking “I’m no good at this. I suck”.
Or “Why am I even trying”.
No stopping because you’re not “as good” as those that have done it thousands of times, surely?
But……………
We’re tempted to do the same with other things.
With our eating.
Our exercise.
To think we’re rubbish at it.
That we’re not as good as others.
Why are we even bothering when it’s hard?
But………
We’re just white belts.
White belts at exercise.
White belts at healthy eating.
We just need to get the practice done.
Get the reps in.
It won’t be a linear, straight line of ‘better every time’.
But we will get better over time.
It’ll get easier.
We’ll work through the levels.
No emotion needed.
Just get those reps in.
Accept others have started earlier and done more practice.
No big deal.
We’ll get better too.
We can be a black belt.
Or somewhere a bit closer at least.
We’ll never get there by not training though.
That’s for sure.
We just need to drop the emotion.
Do it.
Get better at over time.
Get the reps in.
Much love,
Jon ‘Wolf’ Hall
