I mentioned yesterday that it was our monthly Coaching Day last week.

A chance for members to do an assessment on our InBody 270.

Get a really comprehensive overview of where they’re at now.

And help formulate a plan to start taking that closer to where they’d like to be.

A real plan.

Not just “I’m going to eat better and do more exercise”.

That’s a plan that we’ve all tried many times before with minimal success.

And we’re looking to create a plan that will definitely work.

Because some plans don’t automatically work.

There’s so much conflicting information out there that it’s easy to think we’re doing the right thing…………..

But not be.

If we could follow the plan and it not automatically achieve the result, it’s probably not the best plan.

We may think that we “need to cut out carbs”.

Or “stop drinking”.

Or “drink more water”.

Or “stop snacking”.

Or “have breakfast”.

All of these could be methods that help us get there, sure.

If they contribute towards to creation of a sustained calorie deficit.

But they don’t automatically do that.

We could do any or all of them exactly as planned…………..

And still not lose weight.

That calorie deficit is the key.

We don’t have to track those calories…………

But a plan that will definitely create that deficit will always work better than one that might or might not.

I was talking to a new member at the aforementioned Coaching Day (does anyone ever say “aforementioned” in real life?).

And after some tactical questions as to whether her initial plans would definitely work and why her previous attempts hadn’t, she asked……………

“Are you saying I’ve just been eating too many calories?”

“Yes” I replied.

“You’re the first person to tell me that in years” she responded.

Every approach that she’d been given by supposed experts had been based around some version of demonization of certain foods or ways of eating.

Banned foods.

Certain macronutrients (carbs, fat or protein) being “the enemy”.

Not eating at certain times.

Such approaches can work.

If they create that deficit.

But for this member, and many we encounter, it doesn’t work.

Long term.

We don’t feel we can do that forever.

We end up doing something that we don’t feel we should do.

We feel that we’ve failed.

And ‘write if off’.

With a view to starting again at some point in the future.

Ultimately, whatever approach works best for us is the right one.

Knowingly sub-optimal and done beats optimal and not done.

Always.

But it’s worth remembering that “methods are many, principles are few. Methods often change, principles never do”.

And that we can select the method that works for us but only if it helps achieve the essential principle that will guide the results.

And not losing sight of those principles (or being told them by people who are supposedly there to help us) in the choice of those methods.
