Come on, admit it.

You know what the above line comes from, don’t you?

“I’ll tell you what I want, what I really, really want

So tell me what you want, what you really, really want

I wanna, (ha) I wanna, (ha) I wanna, (ha) I wanna, (ha)

I wanna really, really, really wanna zigazig ah”

Wannabe by The Spice Girls innit?

I was reminded of this line in a few conversations with ninjas earlier this week.

When they were explaining some of their food choices.

Ones that were slowing (or reversing) the progress they desire (weight loss, fitness, health, etc)

There were phrases like;

“I was on holiday so I just ate what I wanted”

“When I’m working at home, I get bored and just eat what I want”

“When it’s the weekend, I run out of willpower and just eat what I want”

What I really, really wanna 😉

Which we completely understand.

If an approach is based purely on willpower to make yourself do something you don’t want to……….

Or to stop yourself doing what you do want to………..

It’s doomed to long term failure.

Despite it being the approach the majority of our industry recommend, it rarely works in reality.

Willpower is a finite resource.

It runs out.

We return to doing what we really, really wanna.

From our experience, those that make lasting changes………

Change what they ‘want’.

Not in terms of no longer liking cake, biscuits, convenience food, etc……..

And suddenly liking stuff they didn’t before.

But, in changing what they’re focusing on.

To the destination.

Instead of the journey.

From focusing less on the ‘eight hours locked in a pressurised metal cabin eating rubbish food’………..

To more on the ‘Two week holiday in the sun’.

What they really, really want becomes the long term health, the body they like the look and feel of, more energy, better mood, etc………..

And the things that will take them away from that lose their appeal somewhat.

Life isn’t about denying yourself of what you want (check ? if you like the sound of an approach based more on lasting change than on forcing yourself to do something you don’t want to for as long as you can stand it).

It’s about realising what you really, really want.

And what will get you that 🙂

Much love,

Jon ‘H’ Hall and Matt ‘N’ Nicholson
