For the last four years I’ve got my car through my wife’s work lease scheme.

 

It worked well at the time as probably only costs a fraction more than buying a car, insuring, taxing it and maintaining it…………

 

But all that was taken care of – no unexpected bills for repairs, etc.

 

Last Friday the lease came up for renewal.

 

And we’ve decided to leave it for now and go back to owning a car.

 

With the little one being in nursery, things a bit tighter then they were last time we renewed.

 

What we hadn’t realised is that many insurers won’t count no claims built up on a “fleet policy”.

 

And that no claims from personal policies have to be within the last two years.

 

So I’ve lost the 13 years of no claims I’d built up before that 🙁

 

Some of the policy quotes were coming in at crazy amounts.

 

The only one we could justify included one of the telematics tracker thingys.

 

You know – it’ll be plugged in to the car and will monitor things like speed, braking, where and when you drive and more.

 

And may increase or decrease your policy cost dependant on the score it gives you.

 

It’s getting posted out and I then have to use it 95% + of the time for the next three months.

 

So, for the last three days I’ve really being keeping an eye on my driving.

 

I like to think I’m a good driver.

 

But the last three days has shown me a few things I can tweak that should improve that score.

 

I often accelerate a bit early when the speed limit changes.

 

You know, I’ll be doing 36 as I pass the sign taking from a 30 to a 40.

 

Or slow down a little late.

 

Still be at 45 when I pass the sign from a 60 to a 40.

 

And my driving could be a little smoother in places.

 

Not bad at the moment I wouldn’t say.

 

But definite areas to tweak.

 

And then doing that consistently for three months should create a habit to a large degree.

 

I don’t expect that the day the box goes back, my driving will return to how it was.

 

Maybe somewhere in between.

 

But definitely better.

 

It’s a bit like tracking your food.

 

We often recommend people track what they eat and drink using something like the app MyFitnessPal for three days (just search MyFitnessPal on your AppStore or google it for the website).

 

Not forever as it’s a bit of a pain in the arse.

 

But three days is usually enough to highlight any areas you can tweak.

 

To get better results.

 

And it cuts through any of our thoughts, opinions and justifications.

 

Just cold, hard facts that show you where changes can be made.

 

I’ve honestly NEVER had someone do it who didn’t feel it was worth it.

 

Something like 15 minutes of effort over three days.

 

And the effects should last way beyond that 🙂
