Now then – I’ve been talking about stress a lot recently.

I was having a conversation with Oli (my 5 year old son yesterday), that gave me a bit of food for thought.

We have a 45 minute run over to school and back on a Thursdays which is always good for a nice chat.

If you are a friend of mine on facebook, you may have seen yesterday that Oli updated his favourite songs list.

‘Rollin’ by Limp Bizkit (or ‘Roly Poly Biscuit’ as Jamie calls it) has been pushed out of the top three to be replaced by ‘Wonderful Life’ by Black.

Numbers one and two  are ‘Jai Ho’ by The Pussycat Dolls and ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ by Nirvana by the way.

Ol was asking me what a ‘wonderful life’ was.

And we had quite a deep conversation.

For a 5 year old anyway.

He was asking me what he had to do to have a wonderful life.

I told him it was entirely up to him.

Only he could know what it means to him.

And only he will know if he’s living his life inline with what’s important to him.

It reminded me of a old episode of Red Dwarf (Season 5, Episode II google tells me) called the Inquisitor.

The four crew members are made to stand trial by ‘The Inquisitor’ – he turns into each of them in turn and asks them to justify their existence to ‘themselves’.

The Cat’s case is “I have given pleasure to the world because I have such a beautiful ass”.

Which get’s him off.

Because, he has fulfilled his own expectations and standards of what it means to have a worthwhile life.

#####################################################################

The main thing that causes me stress in my life is when I don’t feel I’m coping as well as I could with the kid’s behaviour.

Three kids between 3 and 5 can be hard work.

Alex and I try, but sometimes they wear our patience thin.

And we don’t always respond in the way we really want to.

It’s out of whack with our expectations of ourselves.

It’s called congruence.

When your actions and behaviours aren’t congruent / in line with your core beliefs and expectations it can be a big cause of stress.

Which, as we’ve covered before isn’t good for you and your waistline.

So, my suggestion here to is stop and take a moment.

Have a think what is truly important to you.

Ignore what everyone else says and thinks.

AveraIt’s your life.

And, have a look at what you’re doing.

Are your actions and behaviours in line with what you think is important?

If not, what changes can you make?

One at a time.

Remember – one toy in, one toy out.

Much love,

Jon ‘Average ass’ Hall and Matthew ‘Get’s people a nice ass’ Nicholson
