Can you place the lyric?
From ‘Message in a Bottle’ – the 1979 single by The Police.
“Walked out this morning
Don’t believe what I saw
A hundred billion bottles
Washed up on the shore”
100 billion?
How does he know?
Even counting them at three per second would take over 1,000 years.
Counting the number in a set area and multiplying by an estimate of the total area would be quicker.
But only semi-precise.
It’s a bit like ‘Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree’.
“Now the whole damned bus is cheerin’
And I can’t believe I see
A hundred yellow ribbons round the ole oak tree”.
100?
No way has he got time (or inclination) to count that while his ‘love’ is waiting for him.
An approximation at best.
But that’s what we, as a species, are prone to do.
Give an overly precise number to what it, at best, often a rough guess.
We do the same with our food tracking.
Reckoning we’re in a calorie deficit when we really have no idea.
Or maybe we track to some degree but not overly accurately and wonder why we’re not losing weight.
As we always say, we don’t ‘need’ to track to lose weight.
If we’re losing (or maintaining) in a way we’re happy with, then crack on without.
If we know exactly where we’re going ‘wrong’ and are happy with that, that’s cool too.
But if we’re not quite sure……….
If our effort levels don’t seem to match our results……….
If we’re telling ourselves it was becuase we “went to a wedding”, “ate bread”, “had a few social occasions”, “had a holiday”, “didn’t have time to cook”, “don’t have many options at work”……………..
Or any number of other things that lie somehwere between ‘completely irrelevant’………..
And ‘stuff that can easily be adjusted for elsewhere’………..
The getting some more ‘accuracy’ can be invaluable.
A bit of a pain, sure.
But way less of a pain then we’re probably telling ourselves.
Less time and effort in a week than a single workout.
And infinitely more beneficial.
If we’re doing the equivalent of guessing at ‘100 billion bottles’ or ‘100 yellow ribbons’………..
There’s little I can advise that will be more beneficial.
If you’re already with us, go check out the tracking module (and, maybe, the others) in Phase 1 on the tab / app.
If you’re not already with us, and still ‘trying to do it myself’……….
