I’ve mentioned that I went on a ‘quarterly meet up’ for my coaching programme the other week.

At one point, the guy taking it was trying to work out a sum to make a point.

“What’s 700 time 17?” he asked.

A few seconds later I answered with “11,900”.

And the entire room turned round and looked at me.

The guy next to me even said “How did you do that?”

Now, I am pretty good at mental maths.

But this sum wasn’t as hard as it seemed.

700 times 10 is 7,000.

Half of that is 3,500 and add them together to get 15 x 700 = 10,500.

Then two more 700s is 1,400.

Add that on for 11,900.

Not saying it’s easy.

But not too hard if you give it a go.

But I’ve always found with mental maths that a lot of people assume it’s harder than it is.

And don’t even try.

There were some smart guys in that room.

But I don’t think a single one of them was actually trying to answer the question.

————————————-

There’s a lot of things like this in life.

Seem complicated.

But not actually too bad when you give it a go.

Only a small percentage of people I’ve ever recommended 3 days of tracking their food with an app like MyFitnessPal have ever done it.

Every single one who didn’t said it looked too time consuming and complicated.

But they hadn’t spent more than a few seconds trying in the vast majority of cases.

Again, not saying it’s easy.

But I’d be amazed if the vast majority of people couldn’t get the hang of it within 15 minutes.

15 minutes to, potentially, unlock they key to clearing up where you might be ‘going wrong’.

Possible the best 15 minutes they could ever spend.

A million times better than 15 minutes of exercise.

Same with the support systems on our app.

It always really saddens me when people leave and they haven’t even tried to use them.

Sure, they take a little bit of figuring out.

But, again, not that much.

Watching the videos that explain them takes a few minutes.

Getting us to show you takes the same.

As does having a little play with them.

Looking at it for a couple of seconds and deciding it’s too complicated (or time consuming) is setting yourself up for failure.

I don’t expect everyone to use our systems.

Or try MyFitnessPal.

Or any of the other things we might recommend.

But to write them off as too complicated or time consuming after only a few seconds of trying (if that)?

And then not achieve their goals? myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting

That makes me sad 🙁

Much love,

Jon ‘Adrian I’ Hall and Matt ‘Paul I’ Nicholson

P.S. One bonus ninja point for getting those middle names even using Google. 10 if you know without 😉
