I read the other day that from 2014-15 to 2016-17 England’s seven major retailers sold six billion fewer single-use plastic bags.
An 83% drop in usage.
Substantial that, isn’t it?
————— I often use the word ‘substantial’ to describe my youngest son. Sounds nicer than ‘massive’ ————–
We all know what happened between those years, don’t we?
They started charging 5p.
Years and years of, essentially, ‘trying harder’ to re-use bags and reduce the need for new ones……………
And, all along, we’d been using more and more……………
Make one little change like that and the results come.
I’m as guilty as anyone.
Despite considering myself to be somewhat environmentally conscious………….
I never ‘remembered’ to take bags………….
And probably got new ones 99% of the time I went to the shops.
Now I keep a ‘bag of bags’ in the car boot……………
And rarely get new ones.
Success at anything we’ve struggled with before rarely comes from just ‘trying harder’ in the same way.
Something needs to change.
In our heads…………….
In our lives……………..
In our approach…………..
If trying harder hasn’t, on average and over time, worked for you, don’t feel bad.
It doesn’t for anyone else.

If nothing changes, nothing changes.
