You may have gathered that the purpose of these blogs is to help you.

Some are designed to help question self-limiting beliefs and mindsets.

Some are basic “things to do” type posts.

Some are to help you see through the mountains of misinformation, confusion and contradictory information that is out there.

This is one of the latter.

####### Check our briefing meetings at RISE in Macclesfield if you like the sound of being helped to see through all that misinformation and contradiction. Whilst having fun 🙂 ######

Many times I’ve heard from our members that they have been advised by supposed experts that they need to “eat more to lose weight”. So can you lose weight by eating more?

Apparently it “gets your metabolism going”

Whatever that is supposed to mean.

Is it true?

Short answer………

No!

Long answer………..

Also no!

If eating too little was why people gained weight, all Ethiopians would be obese.

########

Quick aside – Using Ethiopians in this context may now be massively incorrect (and, possibly, racist). In fact a quick Google shows Ethiopia has Africa’s fastest growing economy. But, as a child of the 80s, I remember Bob Geldof and chums particularly specifying that those starving kids they showed on those Live Aid videos were Ethiopian!

Can you lose weight by eating more?

What “eat more” implies is eating in the same way as you are now, but eating more to “light that fat burning furnace”

Clearly nonsense when you think about it.

While weight loss is multi-factorial…………

It does boil down to energy in versus energy out.

Massive decade-long studies of hundreds of thousands of people bear this out.

So how would increasing energy and keeping everything else equal equate to improved weight loss?

It wouldn’t.

It doesn’t.

What often happens when people lose weight is;

A) They reduce their consumption of calorie dense (and usually processed) food

B) Increase their consumption of (generally less calorie dense) fresher foods such as meat and vegetables

The volume of food may increase.

But the energy content goes down.

Just look at the back of a (58g) Mars Bar and work out the weight of a calorie equivalent amount of chicken and broccoli (130g of each – over four times as much food in total).

can you lose weight by eating more?

Not saying that you have to only eat chicken and broccoli – that is very boring!

Or that you can’t eat Mars Bars.

Just explaining why your mate who’s gone on a health kick seems to be losing weight by eating more food.

It’s not because they are eating four times as many Mars Bars as before.

############

Again we know weight loss is multi factorial.

But we do need to be in an energy deficit.

But an energy deficit doesn’t mean we need to go hungry.

We can even end up eating a greater volume of food if the energy content reduces or we burn more.

But eating more of the same food, all else being equal, to accelerate weight loss makes no sense!

P.S. Tomorrow I’m going to cover why you’re “not losing weight despite eating healthily”

P.P.S. Yesterday’s middle names – Saturday Night was a song by Whigfield and John Travolta starred in Saturday Night Fever. Saturday innit 😉

P.P.S. While I’m on a bonus point giving frenzy, you can get one for Matt’s middle name today 🙂
