———————-

At the marathon on Sunday (see yesterday’s blog) we were able to see my wife and our sister-in-law several times along the route.

Partly because we were tracking them live on Google Maps and could tell accurately where they were, where we could meet them and know when they were about to come into view.

We also had the official ‘Marathon’ app which we used to track them and others.

Some friends, members, etc who were running.

And Mo Farah and Eliud Kipchoge.

So we could see what happened with them.

It’s not as accurate as the Google Maps as it only goes off timing gates at each 5k and the average speed between them.

But it clearly showed EK pulling away from MF (as they were labelled).

My eldest son was convinced Mo would come back.

I wasn’t.

Although we all remember those amazing come backs where someone picks through the field, more races are won by the early leader than any other position.

Same with horses.

49% of F1 races are won by the driver that starts in pole position.

‘Coming from behind’ and overcoming a deficit isn’t as common as we might think.

The best way to win a race is to lead from the start.

To pull it back we not only have to zero the ‘speed deficit’ that allowed us to fall behind……….

But we have to create a ‘speed surplus’ to catch them up.

A big double whammy

And it’s why losing weight can be difficult.

To have been gaining weight we have been eating in a calorie surplus.

We know there’s more around how and why that’s happened, but it has.

We not only need to zero that surplus………..

But to create a deficit that will allow us to ‘catch up’.

To undo that ‘gap’ that’s been created.

If we’ve been eating 500 calories more per day than we need then to go to a 500 calorie deficit is 1,000 drop.

Doable, but not easy.

But, much like making that come back in a race, it has to be done.

The key is not to fall further behind.

The race is long.

Time is on your side.

You’ve got the rest of your life to catch up.

Hopefully won’t take that long, sure.

But the ‘race’ won’t stop before then.

Sometimes we’ll catch up a little (deficit).

Sometimes we’ll maintain that ‘gap’ (maintenance).

Sometimes we might drop a little further behind (surplus).

But the key is to not slow down more than we have to (eat like a maniac) because we haven’t caught up yet.

To not sit on the side of the track for while thinking “sod it” only to get up again and have more ground to catch up.

To not think the other guy is too far ahead so it’s not even worth trying.

However far ‘behind’ we are in the race right now is just what it is.

Can’t be changed now.

We can just work on catching up.

Or at least not falling much further behind for now.

Slow down and speed up as circumstances dictate.

Just don’t stop.

Much love,

Jon ‘CW’ Hall and Matt ‘F’ Nicholson

P.S. Anyone know, or hazard a guess at, both mine and Matt’s (actual) middle names?
