———————-

I was in a proper gym the other day.

By which I mean a place where there’s just a load of equipment that you’re renting access to.

And whether you go or not, get results or know what you’re doing no one knows or cares.

And I passed the PT profile boards.

Reminded me of my very first one.

We opened up the Fitness First at Sheffield Millhouses on Monday 3rd February 2003.

————– I had to have a quick google to work that date out. I spent a week living with my Grandparents whilst house hunting and had been in my new place for a week by my birthday on the 18th February when I went out for tea with my parents and accidentally said the F word in front of them for the first and, I believe, the only, time —————

There was me, Ady Swissball (so named as he liked standing on one) and Steve as the PTs.

Joined shortly after by now well known London based FitPro (and very handsome man) Olly Foster, Herol ‘Bomber’ Graham (the boxer), Steve ‘Bomber’ Newell (who tried to make a rubbish joke about bombs so we called him Bomber for the rest of his time there) and many, many others over the years.

And Leon Hall who Steve liked to group with me as “The Fabulous Personal Training Hall brothers”.

Even though (or probably because) Leon was several inches shorter than me and black.

Anyway, I’ve digressed.

We all had these boards on the wall to show prospective clients how epic we were.

And pretty much every gym I’ve ever been in since has them.

Many have a “Likes and Dislikes” section.

As our did back then.

And this one I saw the other day did.

And do you know what by far the most common ‘Dislike’ I’ve seen on these is?

————– Hint: It’s in the blog title —————-

Yup – excuses.

Which I’ve never liked.

Because it’s invariably on the board of a 23 year old who lives with their mum.

Who has no other commitments other than being in the gym.

Probably less injuries and general wear and tear on the body.

And, as their boards often explain, always loved sport and was really good at it.

And there’s nothing wrong with any of those things, of course.

But to be in that position…………………

And to dismiss 50 year old menopausal Mavis, who has three kids, a busy and challenging job, is riddled with aches and pains and injuries and has never really enjoyed exercise………….

As making ‘excuses’……………

Doesn’t sit all that well.

We get the challenges you face.

Partly because we’ve worked with hundreds of others who have.

And we face a number of them ourselves (nearly 40, tonnes of injuries and aches and pains, busy, four kids).

They are not things to just be dismissed.

But…………..

They are often things that can end up derailing us more than they have to.

And that we can mitigate for and workout around to a reasonable degree.

And we can challenge our beliefs and mindsets around to do what it realistic under the circumstances.

Just because we may not have the time to do several hour-plus long workouts a week doesn’t mean we can’t do any exercise.

Not being able to (or feeling like) ‘eat perfectly’ (whatever that means) all the time doesn’t mean we need to go too far in the other direction.

We can always work around injuries and aches and pains and do the appropriate version.

We get that the reason someone isn’t in the shape they’d like to be isn’t an “excuse” and that it’s not to be dismissed.

But, let’s look at what can be done to get the best we can, taking that into account? (clicking this link and getting booked in for next Tuesday’s find out more meeting would be the best first step –> myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting).

Much love,

Jon ‘Tomatoes’ Hall and Matt ‘Mushrooms’ Nicholson
