Who likes the Back To The Future film trilogy?

I know I do!

If, somehow, you’re not aware of them, the three films chronicle the adventures of Marty McFly and Doc Emmet Brown as they use the DeLorean Time Machine Doc Brown has invented to travel from 1985 to 1955 to 1985 to 2015 to 1985 to 1885 to 1985.

And assorted entertaining shenanigans that occur along the way.

In the first film, Marty travels from 1985 to 1955 and there are a number of examples of accepted societal changes sticking out.

The idea of a “Coloured Mayor” is outlandish by 1955 standards.

Marty’s body warmer is only recognisable as a life preserver and Marty’s Grandad (who I recently learned shares a name with my nephew) assumes that he is in the Navy and has “jumped ship”.

And Doc Brown is confused by Marty’s use of the word “heavy”.

As in “very important or serious”.

“Weight has nothing to do with it” responds The Doc.

And he’s right.

With food, at least.

People often comment when they start with us that “I don’t each much”.

Or “I don’t know why I’m not losing weight. My portion sizes aren’t all that big”.

When we get them to track their intake for a few days, a few things jump out out at them.

They, normally, are eating a greater volume / weight than they thought.

But, often more importantly, some of their choices were much denser than they realised.

Much more calories for the weight than they expected.

There are some take out drinks from coffee shops that barely touch the sides and give you 700 calories.

You could have nearly 2 kilos of carrots for that (other less calorie dense foods you might enjoy more are available).

A handful of nuts can be as many calories as some entire meals.

There are plenty of puddings that will increase the “weight” of a meal by 30% but double it’s total calories.

We can be tactical with our choice of main and have twice as much food for the same less calories.

We can find things to eat that allow us to have sufficient volume / weight so that we don’t go hungry…………..

That are tasty, convenient and enjoyable…………

But that put us in calorie deficit.

Remember, Doc Brown was right.

“Weight has nothing to do with it”.

Much love,
