I came to something of a realisation the other day.

Everybody eats breakfast everyday.

There’s no such thing as ‘skipping breakfast’.

Short of never eating again, you have to have breakfast at some point.

Breakfast is, literally, the breaking of the fast.

So whatever the first thing you eat in a day is, that’s your breakfast.

If it’s at lunchtime, that’s your breakfast.

If it’s cake or biscuits mid-morning, you’ve had cake or biscuits for breakfast.

When we talk to people about the importance of breakfast………..

We don’t, necessarily, mean that you have to have a full meal immediately on waking (although I like to).

It’s more about what the first thing you eat does to you.

Both physiologically (insulin levels, neuro receptor activation, etc)………..

But also a little more ‘psychologically’.

There’s loads of research that shows that a high sugar and starch breakfast makes you more likely to consume more sugar and starch for the rest of the day.

Sure, in a lab setting where everything else is controlled, it doesn’t matter what you have for ‘breakfast’.

If the calories in and out are controlled and matched for.

Ie: 200 cals of cereal versus 200 cals of something with a balance of protein, fat and carbs followed by controlled other meals and activity levels, leads to exactly the same results from a weight loss perspective.

Energy balance innit?

But do any of you live in a lab?

Your ‘breakfast’ is likely to impact the rest of your choices.

For various reasons.

And we’ve always found a more balanced breakfast (protein, fat and carbs) leads to better results.

Whatever time that ‘breakfast’ was 🙂

Much love,

Jon ‘Breakdance’ Hall and Matt ‘Breakhand’ Nicholson
