Those of you that have me as a Facebook friend may have noticed that I posted a picture of a school sports field last Tuesday with the caption “Final Sports Day for Oli – 7th time lucky that we’ll get all the way through this one :)”

Oli is my eldest child (11 in a few weeks) and finishes primary school.

Unlike his brother who goes to the same school, he’s always struggled with nerves and his confidence.

Sports Days in the past have been weeks of nerves followed by panic attacks and tears on the day.

Last year he came close – we’d put a lot of prep in and he felt good going in, only to get thrown by the penultimate race and pull out of the middle distance run.

The following status, which I posted a few hours after the first, is how he got on this year:

“So incredibly proud of Oli at his final Sports Day at Longstone!

Didn’t get off to the start he’d have liked as didn’t do the middle distance run which was first this time.

Determined to come back and do the sprint but, sadly, slipped and fell heavily after a few metres. Immediately got up and finished which was fantastic and wouldn’t have happened a few years ago.

Doubly distraught at this point but also doubly determined to finish off the ‘main event’ Time Ball as his house Chatsworth were behind going into it (by 95 points it turned out).

Jamie and pals took the win in the Year 3/4 Time Ball, so it was all to play for in the Year 5/6 game.

With a definite limp, he ran his hardest and the team came third leaving the overall standings too close to call.

And………… for the first time in 14 years………. Chatsworth took the Sports Day win………. and House Captains Oli and Connie stepped up to lift the cup and shield…….. and I was glad it had just started raining, so no one could see I was crying……….

The perfect end to Primary School for Oli :)”

It wasn’t quite the result, he set out to achieve.

Nerves got the better of him on the middle distance again (he ran off to get his inhaler just as they were about to start).

And he was devastated after the fall.

But…………..

He got straight back up!

A few years ago I’d have had to go and get him and take him round the back of the playground to console him so his friends wouldn’t see him cry.

Now, his first instinct was to get straight back up and keep going.

Then pull himself together and be ready for the last event.

A huge progression and I’m mega proud of him.

The thing is though, we all have slips and falls.

Little set backs along the way.

Days where we don’t eat as well as we might have liked.

Choices we instantly regret.

Stuff that unexpectedly gets in our way.

Things our of our control that flabotage us.

Other people that try and do the same.

But, we have two choices when this happens.

Walk off the track feeling sorry for ourselves and plan to “try again” next week / month / January.

Or we can get back up (check myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting if you need to get up again, this time for the last time).

And keep going.

Set backs never stopped anyone crossing the finishing line……………

They just make it take a little longer to get there!

Much love,

Jon ‘Was also rubbish at Sports Day’ Hall and Matt ‘Fastest boy in my year’ Nicholson
