Take a guy who’s had a brain injury.

One that’s severed the the connection between the two ‘halves’ of the brain.

Go on, go find one.

If you can’t locate someone, don’t worry.

The good news is other people have already done tests on these dudes.

Apparently the left side of the brain processes the stuff from the right half of the field of vision for both eyes.

And vice versa.

So, you can show an instruction to the left side of vision (and hence the right side of the brain)……..

And, as the left side of the brain (responsible for narratives / stories) isn’t getting that info, it doesn’t know why that instruction is being followed.

And it starts making stuff up!

Show one of these dudes an instruction to walk………

Then ask them why they are walking……..

And they’ll start saying they are going for a drink, to the toilet, etc.

Because it doesn’t have all the info it needs, it searches it’s memory banks for similar situations and applies the narratives from them.

########

Now, I’m assuming the hemispheres of your brain are connected.

But the reason I’m sharing this with is it’s a really clear way to understand that there is a part of the brain response for narrative / stories.

And how it can search memory for similar situations and, potentially, misapply existing stories to what’s happening now.

And, injured brain or not, we all do this on a regular basis.

Taking things as ‘confirmation’ of our opinions that healthy eating is boring and restrictive……

And exercise is boring and generally horrible……….

Whilst ignoring things that contradict this.

Continuing to tell ourselves the stories of how we are too busy and don’t have the time.

About how it’s different for us.

Until, one day, something happens that makes us realise that these ‘narratives’ aren’t the hard and fast facts we told ourselves they were.

## Starting with us is often one of these things 😉 –> myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting ##

We’re not saying it’s always easy.

And we know sometimes people don’t like being ‘called out’ on these things.

But that’s an important part of our job.

And knowing that there is a part of the brain that applies these narratives…….

Can be an importan first step to realising that is what they are.

Much love,
