Every now and again we get replies to these blogs that attempt to refute what we say.

We recently got sent a link with the message “Here’s proof that calorie deficits don’t work”.

It was a Facebook post from someone’s page.

Now being a Facebook post doesn’t automatically mean it’s wrong.

But it definitely doesn’t automatically prove it’s right either.

It was about some research (it was very vague) that shows that calorie counting, as an approach, doesn’t work, long term, for most.

Which we could’ve told them.

But………..

That doesn’t mean calorie deficits don’t work.

Different thing.

All the verified, peer reviewed, large scale research ever done shows that (myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting for those of you that want an approach based of actual science rather than “it worked for me” ‘Bro-Science’)…………

Any eating approach only elicits weight loss if there’s a calorie deficit.

Now that doesn’t mean that calories are the entirety of the conversation.

I’m sure you’ve seen from these blogs that we don’t think that.

Weight loss and gain is multi-factorial.

But an average calorie deficit has to be there.

It has to underpin whatever else is happening.

Counting calories isn’t necessarily the approach you have to use.

There are many ways to skin this specific cat.

Different diets and ways of eating, habit and mindset based approaches, exercise and more.

But kidding ourselves that there doesn’t need to be a calorie deficit is only going to make it all harder than it has to be.

Much love,

Jon ‘Budget’ Hall and Matt ‘Deadlift’ Nicholson
