I’ve mentioned many times in these blogs that other FitPros sometimes ask me for advice.

In an industry where most struggle to make ends meet and pay the bills (particularly this last 15 months), we must be doing something alright to have a busy and thriving business nearly a decade in.

I got asked the title of this blog the other day.

And have been asked it many times over the years.

“How do you deal with time wasters?”

Or an expression of their frustration at “tyre kickers”.

Which I get.

But, as with many things, it’s worth questioning.

Whilst I might help people with the mindsets of “waiting till the time is right” (it never is) that may have been holding them back…………

I know nobody sets out to waste someone else’s time.

We’re all to busy for that.

When someone enquires about what we do………..

And decides it’s not for them………..

They’ve not set out to “waste my time”.

They’ve just wanted to see if the programme is a good fit for them.

And they’ve decided it’s not.

Which is cool.

Over the years I’ve enquired about countless things………..

And then decided not to give them a go.

I wasn’t enquiring with a view to wasting anyone’s time – I just wanted to know if it was what I was looking for.

Ultimately, from my point of view at least………..

If a FitPro gets a lot of enquiries………..

Who don’t then take them up on their programme………..

That’s the FitPro’s ‘problem’, not the potential customer’s.

They’ve just not got good enough at putting across their message and what it is that they do.

They’ve not honed the skills needed to help someone who could be a fit to see the value of what is on offer.

When we say “time wasters” and “tyre kickers” we’re making it about “them” and not “us”.

We’re not seeing our role in this situation.

And how we’re contributing to it.

Or even causing it.

As we may do in other areas of life.

If our friends or relatives peer pressure us into certain food or drink choices………

Flabotage us, if you will…………

If we say “No” five times and then do it anyway in the end to “shut them up”……..

Or miss workouts because they say we’re “boring” and “no fun anymore”……..

Then that’s on us.

We’re teaching them to do that.

If those around us engage us in gossip and negative talk that brings us down……..

We’re allowing that to happen.

If situations are consistently not as we’d like, it’s worth assessing our own role in that situation.

And, perhaps, making changes there that will set us up for success?

Being consistent about how we respond to other people’s behaviours so they learn to interact with is in the way we want them to.

Much love,

Jon ‘Flabotagers is a great word isn’t it?’ Hall
