If you’ve read these blogs for a while (and, if you haven’t, boy have you missed out) then you may know I spend my Thursdays in Bakewell.

My two oldest sons go to school over there.

They have half the week with me in Macc, but were born over there, their mum still lives there, that’s where most of their friends are, etc).

As I do drop off and pick up every Thursday and don’t particularly need to come back to Macc in-between, I stay over as it saves an extra hour and half driving.

I go for a workout at facility similar to ours, do 3 1/2 hours work on their WiFi (I’m there right now, a week later to this story), help in Jamie’s P.E. class and then do another hour of work in the school staff room.

——————— I do 15+ hours on a Monday to enable this before anyone thinks I’m slacking ———————

The other day I was heading over to the school when I got a call from the PE teacher – I wasn’t needed as it was dress rehearsal for the Christmas play.

I’m already a bit cheeky ‘borrowing’ my friend’s WiFi as it is (cheers Tom) so thought going back there would be a bit much.

I’d eaten so didn’t want to waste money going to a cafe with WiFi.

And going and sitting in the staff room when I hadn’t just been helping out would be a bit weird.

So I went for a run.

I’ve been doing 5 miles a week this year – which will leave me on about 250 miles more for the year than I’ve ever previously done.

I was already wearing trackies, T-Shirt and trainers so was fine from that point of view.

But I always see running as a multi-tasking opportunity.

To do some form of studying.

And audio book, something from my coach, etc.

And I always makes sure there’s something on my phone and I have my blue-tooth headphones with me.

Even if I’m not expecting to be able to use them.

As it means, that whenever plans change, whatever happens, I can be doing something useful.

No sitting there wasting time because something wasn’t as I expected.

Those headphones and audio on my phone is my default back up plan.

And it can help us in all aspects of life to have such things.

Even though we don’t plan to use it, we can familiarise ourselves with the home workout section of the App (under the + GTP : Home dropdown on the Sessions tab), so we’ve no excuse not to do something if we, unexpectedly, can’t make our workout.

We can have our ‘PE kit’ in the car at all times, in case “something comes up”.

We can always have something reasonably balanced and nutritious in tins in the cupboard or in the freezer so we don’t “have to” swing via the pizza place on the way home when the original meal plan goes awry.

We can always have a back up plan.

We don’t have to ‘pull the trigger’ on it if we don’t want to.

We can leave the workout and get the take out pizza if we like.

But we can, relatively easily, make it so that’s always a choice.

We can make it so we are in control.

So missed workouts and crap eating aren’t just something that ‘happens to us’.

They aren’t the result of circumstance.

They are just a choice.

A choice we’ll make sometimes, sure.

But, hopefully, less than when we didn’t have those back up plans in place 🙂

Much love,

Jon ‘Harald’ Hall and Matt ‘Gormsson’ Nicholson
