If you’ve read some of these blogs recently (and why wouldn’t you?), you’ll know I was on a quarterly meet up in Newcastle the other week as part of the coaching programme I’m on.

Remember – coaches who don’t have coaches are to be treated with caution / disdain.

I got lots of blog idea while I was there.

The programme pretty much pays for itself in blog idea alone (I need to come up with 260 of them per year).

One of the guys was talking about his attempts to give up smoking.

And another one of the guys explained how he’d give up a number of years ago.

He’d spent years ‘trying’ to give up.

‘Having a go at’ various approaches to quitting nicotine.

Until, one day, it came to him in a flash of inspiration.

He realised he needed to stop thinking of himself “as a smoker who was trying to give up”.

And, instead, to think of himself as a non-smoker.

“I am a non smoker” he would tell himself.

Started forced to begin with.

Didn’t feel quite right.

But, relatively quickly, felt more and more real.

And he’s never smoked since.

Similar mindset shifts often underpin our best long term transformations.

People often come to us having previously though things like “I’m on a diet”.

“I’m trying to lose weight”.

“I’m cutting down on XYZ at the moment”.

“I’m trying to go the the gym”.

And so on.

All valid ideas.

But the mindset that underpins them feels very temporary.

It’s something that will probably stop at some point in the near future.

And, invariably, does.

When people make the change in the way they think to things more like the following………..

It often starts a bit forced……….

But becomes more natural over time…………..

And just becomes kinda what they do.

“I look after my health”

“I want to be around for a long time for the kids”

“I think it’s important to set a good example to the children”

“I just care about what I put in my mouth because of how it makes me feel”

And so on.

Ways of thinking about things that are ‘just what you do’ always last longer and create better results than ‘something I’m trying to do at the moment’.

########## Maybe, “I am a ninja” rather than “I’ve joined a gym” –> myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting #########

Find your way to shift from “I’m trying to give up smoking” to “I am a non smoker”.

And see how you get on 🙂

Much love,

Jon ‘And the Bandit’ Hall and Matt ‘Robinson’ Nicholson
