We’ve mentioned before that we’re not fans of counting calories long term.

It’s a pain in the arse and we’re more fans of lifestyle and habit based approaches.

But…………..

We know that a calorie defecit has to underpin weight loss.

It has to be there.

All the large, controlled tests ever done show that any approach to eating only elicits weight loss when there’s that average deficit there.

And that they all lead to weight gain if there’s a surplus.

Again, doesn’t mean that calories are all there is to consider.

But it’s got to be considered.

Over the years I’ve must have had several hundred people say to me something along the lines of;

“I’m not sure why I’m not losing weight”.

Or some variation of that.

When I (or if I had) asked them, how many of them could (or would’ve been able to) answer the question:

“What’s been your average calorie intake over the last two weeks?”

I’d say a handful at most off the top of my head.

They could hazard a guess in some cases.

But not with much confidence.

Most reply with “I….. errrr…. don’t know”.

Those that did know, usually didn’t need to ask the question in the first place.

Again, we know it’s a pain.

And, for most, it’s not a long term solution.

But, if you accept that a calorie deficit is required (and if you can prove otherwise, you’ve got a Nobel Prize for Physics awaiting you)…………..

And you don’t know for sure if you’re in an average calorie deficit or not………….

It’s an obvious first port of call.

Doesn’t matter if you’ve been ‘cutting carbs’, ‘intermittent fasting’, ‘stopped snacking’ or anything else if you don’t know if that deficit is there.

Doesn’t need to be tracked forever.

A few days is often sufficiently eye opening to answer any “I don’t know why I’m not losing weight” type questions.

If you’re already a member, check the the tracking module in Phase one on the app (check the rest of the modules too if you haven’t already or need a refresher).
