One of my ‘things’ for this year is a series of books I’m doing for my four kids.

“365 things I love about Oli / Izzie / Jamie / Charlie”

As you can see from the picture, I write something I love about each of them in their book each day.

From their birthday this year to their birthday next year.

Or that was the plan anyway.

I’ve fallen behind a few times.

And recently fell over a month behind.

What started out as just missing a few days as I was low on time……….

Soon became me thinking I needed to “find a block of time to catch up”.

And as I got further behind, that amount of time to find became bigger.

And, therefore, harder to find.

Until I realised last week that was a silly way to look at it.

I was falling progressively further behind by thinking I needed to fully catch up in one go.

So I decided I should just restart doing at least one a day.

To not fall any further behind.

And catch up where I can.

I’ve been catching up a few days per day on average.

But, at the very least, staying ‘level’.

I’ll be caught up at some point in the next few weeks.

It’s human nature to do that isn’t it?

With lots of things.

Our finances.

Our work.

And our health and fitness.

To feel we need to ‘catch up’ as quickly as possible.

And, when we can’t see how we could do that at the moment, to allow ourselves to fall further and further behind.

To think “I’m not going to lose that 3 stone in the run up to Christmas”………..

And, instead, gain another stone in December.

When we could just decide to stay ‘still’ for now.

To fall no further behind.

Maybe catch up a little.

But, at the very least, to have less to catch up on when circumstances are better.

We get that December is a tricky month.

We don’t expect that results this month will be as good as in January for the vast majority.

It would be foolish to think otherwise.

But…………

Do we need to do the equivalent of not filling in any more entries in my book……………

Of falling further and further behind…………

Just because we can’t fully catch up right now?

Do what you can.

Stay level at least.

Slow down and speed up.

Just don’t stop.

Much love,

Jon ‘Keep on fallin’ Hall and Matt ‘My boo’ Nicholson
