I’m writing these blogs last Saturday in a cafe in Bakewell while my middle son is in the park playing football with his mates.

I did some in another cafe in Bakewell a few weeks ago when I was stuck here due to the snow.

And I’ve done some whilst waiting for hospital appointments with my mum recently (knee replacement, she’s fine).

And for the first time in a while I’ve got comfortably ahead on my blogs.

After a period of finding it a bit more tricky.

And it made me realise why.

I’ve had years and years of writing blogs whilst, essentially, waiting for a child.

They’re in a lesson of some sort.

Or I had that spare half a day a week when I used to volunteer in my two older son’s primary school for half a day a week and there wasn’t enough time to come back to Macc in-between.

Nowadays I don’t have much of that time.

A lot more dropping off and picking up later with no waiting around needed.

It was useful having that time where there was almost nothing else to do.

Taking off the table the other things I could do at RISE or at home.

Of both the productive and non-productive type.

Sometimes how we use our time is somewhat ‘forced’.

Often we can choose to ‘force’ it more than we might tell ourselves.

We can schedule our workouts in advance and protect that time in the same way we would an important work meeting.

Same with time we might spend in helping us make better food choices.

A time of the week when we put some level of planning into that week’s food and maybe do a click-n-collect food order for that.

Perhaps a time when we do some sort of food prep.

Not necessarily batch cooking 21 meals and putting them in Tupperware……….

But doing some sort of prep that will save time later and make the better choice the easier one.

For stuff we’ve been struggling to do / keep up on / get ahead with then planning sets times for it and protecting that time can make all the difference.

Much love,

Jon ‘Behind’ Hall
