I’ve seen a few posts recently about the participants in “I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!” (I’m aware it finished two week ago by the time you read this but I like to get ahead on these bad boys in December).

How they’ve lost weight while being in the jungle.

Because they’ve “hardly been eating anything”.

Because, despite what we might tell ourselves sometimes, that always works.

But, for the last 20 years, I’ve probably had at least one person per week tell me that they don’t know why they’re not losing weight because they “hardly eat anything”.

When I’ve suggested that they might benefit from accurately tracking their food for a few days, they then do one of two things;

– Not track their food and nothing changes

– Track their food and realize that they’re eating more than they thought

Because fat is primarily an energy store.

And I know there’s more to both general eating and healthy eating than just energy balance.

But if we’re consuming less energy than we’re using, it has to come from somewhere.

A little will come from other stores in the body.

But most will come from fat.

The research shows this time and time again.

When in absolutely confirmed energy deficits (where the energy in a closed system is measured rather than just calculating from food labels and activity tables)…….

Everyone ever tested has lost weight.


I don’t say this to be mean.

I say this to empower.

It doesn’t make the solution easy.

But it makes it simple.

If we’ve not lost weight, we just weren’t in an energy deficit.

And anything else that confuses or masks this just makes it all harder than it has to be.
