Have you ever heard that “Comparison is the their of joy”?

Or that “you should never compare yourself to other people”?

Sounds valid, no?

How’s that worked out for you?

Have you not compared yourself to anyone since then?

I thought not.

Ain’t gonna happen, is it?

Us humans function on making comparisons.

All day, every day we compare the information coming into our head to previous experience and our frames of reference.

It’s how we work.

Trying not to compare ourselves to others is like someone saying “Don’t eat” to someone wanting to lose weight.

Sure, it would work.

But it’s not the best advice in reality, is it?

So, if we’re going to make comparisons, perhaps the best we can do is be more tactical with the comparisons we make.

Make fairer comparisons.

Ones that will motivate us and give us direction.

Not ones that will make us feel bad.

There’s zero point in comparing our physique to the 23 year old fitness model who lives with their mum.

It’s, essentially, their full time job to look like that.

And they don’t actually look quite like that without the lighting and photo-shopping.

Not a comparison that’s going to help.

Looking at how the person we see who has a similar life and challenges to us made manageable changes to what they do to lose weight, increase their energy levels and mood?

Not as “sexy”, sure.

But much more likely to lead to us making positive changes.

Compare ourselves now to ourselves where we feel we could theoretically be if all the planets aligned?

Probably going to make us feel bad about that “gap”.

Compare ourselves now to ourselves a month back?

Measure backwards, progress forwards?

Use movement to build confidence and momentum?

Learn from what didn’t go as well?

Comparison doesn’t have to be “the thief of joy”.

We’re going to do it anyway.

So let’s be selective.

Let’s make it the ‘creator of joy’.

Or, at least, the ‘creator of progression and momentum’?

Much love,

Jon ‘Go’ Hall
